FARM2PEOPLE’S STORY
Farm2People began in 2020 as a grassroots, volunteer operated & led project. That year, we crowdsourced $30,000 and used it to purchase heirloom grain from small, regenerative practicing farmers in Tehachapi. We figured it would be best to start with a less-perishable food product we could pick up and deliver to friends ourselves. So we spent the next few weeks delivering that grain to nonprofits and community based orgs in Los Angeles. That’s how Farm2People was born — as an emergency hunger relief action with benefits to our local food and farming ecosystem.
In 2021, Farm2People continued, 100% volunteer operated, under the fiscal sponsorship of our mentor Alma Backyard Farms. That year we doubled our efforts, adapted our process to cold chain logistics, and began sourcing fruits and vegetables from local and regional farm partners.
In 2022, Farm2People grew, still as a volunteer led and run org. We earned our own 501(c)3 designation (aka nonprofit status), supported 50 farms with sales, and surpassed the 500k lbs milestone!
In 2023, Farm2People hired its first staff member, built our first Board of Directors and expanded services into Greater Los Angeles. We added more farms to our network, served another 200,00 lbs of food and hit another milestone: 4 million nutritious servings served to food insecure families!
In 2024, we made more impact than in all our previous years combined. Please have a look at our 2024 Annual Report for more info. And 2025, despite the many hurdles, has been the most impactful year yet.
We are facing much uncertainty as we enter 2026. With cuts to important federal programs and the termination of the USDA’s Local Food Assistance Cooperative Agreement, Farm2People will be tasked with building new market channels and philanthropic relationships in order to keep our growers growing and our friends and neighbors fed with dignity! Please consider becoming a sustaining Farm2People member today!
